Abstract
Background :- There is increasing interest regarding the health implications of Ramadan fasting in the recent years. Many reports indicate that fasting during the holy month of Ramadan results in reduced body weight and improved metabolic parameters like lipid profile in healthy individuals .
Aim of the study :- To study the effect of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan on serum lipid profile and BMI in healthy adult volunteers.
Subjects and methods :- prospective cohort study was done including a total of 50 healthy volunteers. Venous blood samples were taken from volunteer, 1week before Ramadan, and , in the 28th day of Ramadan . Lipid profile were measured using automated clinical chemistry analyzer. Body mass index (BMI) was also measured for each participant .
Result :- Participants show no significant difference in mean of BMI , p-value 0.11. A significant reduction in mean of total cholesterol , triglyceride , VLDL-C and atherogenic index , p-value 0.01, < 0.001, <0.001, and 0.001, respectively. A significant increase in HDL-C level at the end of Ramadan, p-value 0.001 . No significant difference in mean of LDL-C , p-value 0.13.
Conclusion :-Fasting Ramadan may have beneficial health effects in the levels of lipid profile.
